Field Trip: Rancho Cañada del Oro Open Space (Morgan Hill)

Red-shouldered Hawk by Sarah Chan

This is a joint event with Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority.

Habitat at Rancho Cañada del Oro Open Space Preserve include oak woodland and riparian forest, which are home to a variety of wintering birds like Red-shouldered Hawk, Acorn Woodpecker, Band-tailed Pigeon, Spotted Towhee, Black Phoebe, Scrub Jay, Bewick’s Wren and much more.

Optional: pack your own lunch/snack and we'll picnic together afterwards.

Trip Difficulty: 2.5 miles, paved trails, gravel trails, muddy or possibly muddy after rain, little or no elevation gain, We might have to cross Baldy Ryan Creek by stepping on unstable rocks 

Other Trip Notes: Rain cancels, but dress warmly if it's forecast to be cold and foggy.

Meet: Meet at the overflow lot 1/4 mile up the road from the primary parking lot.  

Directions: From US-101, exit Bailey Ave. Continue west on Bailey Ave for 3 miles. Turn left onto McKean Rd, continue for 2.5 miles, then turn right onto Casa Loma Rd. The preserve is located at the end of Casa Loma Rd and the overflow lot is 1/4 mile up the road from the main parking lot - please do not park in the gravel equestrian lot.
