Members Only: Alviso Bike Ride (San Jose)

Join Matthew Dodder on a Birding By Bike Tour of the Alviso Salt Ponds. We will focus on Shorebirds but we will keep track of any other birds we find along the way. Black Rail is often heard on this trail…

Meet at the Alviso Marina parking lot at 8:00 AM. Our group will cycle north along the east edge of A12, A13, and A15 to the railroad crossing where we will circle A16. Before we end this side trip, we will also visit A17 and view the Drawbridge ghost town across the slough before returning to the parking area. If time (and energy) allows, we may extend the tour and explore the ponds A14, A9, A10, which will add another 5 miles.

Each participant must bring a levy-ready bicycle and helmet. Mountain Bikes or Cross Bikes (with kickstands) are recommended for the gravel trails. No electric bicycles please. We will be stopping regularly during the 8-15 mile tour to scan for Shorebirds and whatever else.

Attendees must bring enough provisions (liquids and snacks) to sustain them during the 3-4 hour trip.

Optional: After our return to the parking lot, attendees are invited to join Matthew at the picnic tables for lunch and chat about the trip.

Trip Notes: Rain or excessive wind will cancel the trip.

Trip Difficulty: 8 -15 mile bike ride on a level packed dirt trail. If it is windy, the ride will be more strenuous.
