Bay Area Bird Photographers (BABP)

Birds of Brazil
by Shun Cheung

Description - This past August, my wife Louisa and I made our second trip to Brazil, mainly to visit the Pantanal area with a photo group. The first time we went there was way back in 2007, with the same two tour leaders as we had this time. Back then, ranchers in the Pantanal would hunt and kill jaguars as they attacked their livestock. Hence jaguars were rarely seen in the wild, and the only one we saw in 2007 was in a zoo. Instead, we photographed a lot of ranches, cowboys, and birds. Since then, the ranchers have discovered that jaguars attract tourists, and tourism is very profitable. Hence jaguars are much better protected, and those big cats are much more habituated to tourists and boats over the years, to a point they just ignore everybody. Therefore, it is a lot easier to spot and photograph them now. Besides jaguars, I got to photograph capybaras, caimans ... and of course a lot of birds, mostly from small boats on the rivers. For this presentation, I'll focus on the birds we saw on that trip, plus a few images of the mammals as well as the Iguazu Falls, which we also saw for the second time.
