Green-winged Teal by Elizabeth Steward

Beginner's Guide to Ducks! (Mountain View)

Fall migration is under way. The bay is a fantastic place to winter, according to the tens of thousands of birds who choose to stay September through May. We will focus on the beautiful ducks: Northern Shovelers, Green-winged Teals, Northern Pintails, Ruddy Ducks, plus White-crowned and Golden-crowned Sparrows. High tide will help us to observe them dabble, dive, dine and hobnob with one another. Bring binoculars if you have them. Otherwise, there will be some binoculars available.

Trip Difficulty: 1-2 miles, paved trails, gravel trails, muddy or possibly muddy after rain, little or no elevation gain, little to no shade.

Other Trip Notes: It can be windy by the bay, so please check the weather!
