Field Trip: Calero Creek Trail Spring Birds (San Jose)

We will start at the Stile Ranch trailhead in the Almaden Valley of San Jose and look for hummingbirds and late sparrows. We will then follow the creek trail towards the IBM Almaden orchard looking for chaparral birds, riparian species, woodpeckers, and raptors. Possible birds include Warbling Vireo, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and Western Flycatcher.

Trip Difficulty: 3 miles, packed-dirt trails, muddy or possibly muddy after rain, uneven or rutted trails, little or no elevation gain, some shade

Other Trip Notes: Wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet; we will be stepping over a small creek.

Meet: Stile Ranch dirt parking lot on San Vicente Avenue

Directions: From CA-85 in San Jose, exit Almaden Expy south. Drive south for about 5 miles, turn right onto Harry Rd, take the next left onto McKean Rd and go 1.3 miles. Turn left onto Fortini Rd, in 0.6 miles turn left onto San Vicente Ave. Parking is on the right. Latitude/Longitude: 37.203347, -121.806014

Facilities: No Toilets, cell phone service, nearest facilities at Calero County Park, Rancho San Vicente entrance
