Stevens Creek County Park

This Cupertino park in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains includes a riparian corridor along Stevens Creek, woodlands and chaparral. The wide variety of habitats in this park make it a top birding destination for migrants and local breeding birds. (year-round)

We’ll check out creek banks, woodland picnic areas and chaparral looking for woodpeckers, Steller’s Jays, Brown Creepers and early migrants. If we are lucky we will see and hear the California Thrasher, Hutton's Vireo, the Warbling Vireo and Cassin's Vireo. The Red-shouldered Hawk and the Red-tailed Hawk are commonly seen in this park.

Trip Difficulty: 1.2 miles, mostly level to gentle slopes. There will be a few short, steep trails.

Meet: Chestnut Parking Lot

Directions: From I-280 in Cupertino take Foothill Expy exit. Continue south on Foothill Blvd for about 2 miles (it becomes Stevens Canyon Rd). Turn left into the first park entrance and meet in the Chestnut Picnic Area parking lot (first parking lot on your left). Latitude/Longitude: 37.306812, -122.073302

Parking Type and Fees: Paved parking. Six dollars, credit card only or Santa Clara County annual pass. 

Facilities: Bathrooms are located in the Chestnut Picnic area, Villa Maria Picnic area and at Bay Tree Parking. Cell is spotty in the park.
