Elements of Bird Photography
by Karen Cohen
The scent of the forest, the mist over the sea and the rising sun creates a sense of expectation and joy. I leave the house while it is still dark and witness the first brush of light on the horizon. I feel akin to all people, over centuries, who watch for the fading of the moon and the first light of day. The owls are just settling in for a nap after hunting, the songbirds are calling to one another and finding ripe berries or seeds. I am so thrilled to witness this abundance of life and beauty our planet offers the ardent observer.
I try to make myself invisible. My camera is an extension of my yearning to capture my impressions. I am particularly drawn to young animals and birds seeking the protection and sustenance of their parents. I hope for beautiful light and a magical moment. These tiny miracles are commonplace and happen every day, every minute. But will I be lucky enough to catch the glint, to find the bird, to see the gesture?
Can I develop the skills, muscle memory, timing, focus, camera mechanics, post processing for a seamless transformation to a meaningful image.
