Burrowing Owl by Sreedhara Alavattam
Members Only Field Trip: Hayward’s Landing & Mt. Trashmore (Hayward)
Hayward Regional Shoreline in Alameda County has acres of salt, fresh, and brackish water marshes, seasonal wetlands, and public trails. Join us for a walk along along a flood channel to Hayward’s Landing on the Bay. Then, we’ll walk the shoreline looking for shorebirds, ducks, and gulls. On the return we will climb a small hill to the top of the landfill to look for sparrows, raptors, geese, and if we’re lucky, Burrowing Owls.
Trip Difficulty: 2-3 miles, gravel trails, packed-dirt trails, muddy or possibly muddy after rain, uneven or rutted trails, some hills (less than 300 ft elevation gain), little to no shade
Other Trip Notes: (This trail follows a flood control channel to Hayward’s Landing on the bay. The trail may be rutted or wet depending on the weather. Wear waterproof shoes or boots if it’s been raining. We’ll return with a 70 ft. climb to the top of Mt. Trashmore landfill which is flat and level.
