Meet at 9:00 AM the Elkhorn Slough Reserve visitors center, located at 1700 Elkhorn Road, Watsonville, CA 95076. After introductions, we will explore the Oak Marsh Loop Trail, totaling 2.5 miles round trip. At the start of the trail there is a 1/8 mile steep hill, descending on the way out and a steep climb retuning. The trail surface will be hard-packed gravel and some sections of boardwalk. There is the possibility for poison oak and ticks at this rugged location, but we will stay on the well-maintained trails. As we walk, we'll keep an eye (and ears!) out for songbirds, sparrows, warblers, hummingbirds, along with raptors. Northern Harriers and White-tailed Kites are often seen right at the start of this loop trail!

Depending on the time and how everyone feels, we'll detour to the Hummingbird Trail extension, that goes out to Hummingbird Island. Shorebirds, ducks, and even more raptors will be visible along this route. We will end back at the visitor's center and enjoy some well-earned treats at the picnic tables!

This trip will be led by the MAS (Monterey Audubon Society) YBC field trip leader, Amanda Preece, and will be a joint trip with the MAS YBC. Please come to meet some out-of-town young birders! Be sure to dress for potentially cool foggy weather but also full sun. Wear sunscreen and bring a hat. Bathrooms are available at the visitors center. Binoculars are available to borrow and we'll have a spotting scope to share when the opportunity arises. Contact Amanda with any additional questions about carpooling, accessibility, or anything else: amanda.preece@montereyaudubon.org

If the trip is full and you'd like to be added in the waiting list, please send mail to : youngbirders@scvas.org
