With increasing recreational activity stretching in time and locations, our staff and volunteers have been advocating against increased access and impacts on remote habitats and sensitive ecosystems. This includes advocacy to restrict access to mountain bikes, and especially electric bikes, on nature trails. For example, we helped the community organizers stop Santa Clara County Parks from developing an expansive mountain bike facility at Sanborn County Park. We supported limiting access to crystal spring watershed to docent-led visitation only. Most recently, we advocated successfully with Midpen Open Space preserves to adhere to their mission of conservation, and not to open additional trails to electric bikes. Lastly, we participated in Valley Water's development of a policy that guides development of creekside trails, and have vocally opposed efforts to light up creekside trails at night.
