SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: March 12, 2020

NEST SITE LOCATIONS:

This is a crucial time of the year for birds. Many species are selecting nest sites, and if all goes well, nest construction begins immediately afterward. This site selection period is particularly important for birds that are considered endangered, threatened or “of concern” because disturbance during this period may interrupt completion of a nest. SCVAS strongly recommends that specific details regarding nest sites or nesting activity be omitted from public posts to South Bay Birds or other list services. This recommendation is to avoid the increase of birder traffic that might force the birds to abandon their site. Because of the public’s interest in Eagles, Hawks and especially Burrowing Owls, the nest locations of these birds should also be considered “sensitive” and omitted from public list services. Truly, one of the best ways to ensure we will see these birds in the future, is to give them enough privacy to reproduce.
