BIRDS OF POST-PROTECTED LANDS

Diane and Peter Hart

Follow the trail of two late-adult-onset birdwatchers as they turned a new hobby into a Peninsula Open Space Trust project to create a photographic record of all the avifauna found on POST-Protected Lands—an adventure that starts at POST’s first project, the Windy Hill Open Space Preserve.

Diane Hart is an educator who has written 20 textbooks—one of which is the first civics text written for the then-new island nation of Palau—and consulted for multiple states on curriculum development and assessment methodology. She is a life-long community volunteer who has long served on the Board of the SCVAS and volunteers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Diane is passionate about birds and birding for many reasons, one of which is that you can bird anywhere, from the Safeway parking lot to the ends of the earth.

Peter Hart is an AI and robotics pioneer and technology leader. He led the project that created the world’s first robot with artificial intelligence, co-invented the method that computes your driving directions, and founded or led half a dozen companies and international research centers. Peter is a furniture maker and pianist who slouched into birding 15 years ago following Diane’s lead (as he usually does), and became engaged in bird photography as a result. He’s interested in the application of technology to conserving biodiversity, and serves on the Board of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
