February 1, 1998
Having passed 200 before the end of January we can definitely say things are off to a good start!
We should be able to add Short-eared Owl, Canyon Wren, and Sage Sparrow before migration starts...and maybe even that rarely reported Ash-throated Flycatcher that returned to the Guadalupe River this winter. Also, any bayside duck flocks are definitely worth checking for Oldsquaw and Black Scoter.

April 30, 1998
Isn't April amazing!
A few things to look for in May include Little Blue Heron, White-faced Ibis, Mountain Quail, Wilson's Phalarope, Red-necked Phalarope, Black Swift, Willow Flycatcher, Purple Martin, Bank Swallow, and Black-chinned Sparrow. Also, we still have no reports of Snowy Plover for the list yet (anybody at SFBBO had one yet?).
235: 4/16/98 OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER
236: 4/16/98 BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD

We still need White-faced Ibis, Wilson's Phalarope, and Black Swift. Be on the lookout for eastern vagrants like the male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK reported to Bill Bousman from a feeder in Mountain View.

July 7, 1998
Well, it looks like we may have missed Black Swifts this year - although Ann Verdi and Clysta Seney did have an unseasonable bird on 7/5/96 along the Guadalupe River at Taylor two years ago. Also no Indigo Bunting yet. A good spot to try for this bird would be among the many Lazuli Buntings along the trails from Ed Levin Park up to Monument Peak - several have been found on the Alameda county side up there in the past.
Otherwise July brings the return of the shorebirds! Semipalmated Sandpipers have already been reported and Baird's and Pectoral Sandpipers may not be far behind - not to mention the fun rarities that Santa Clara County is becoming famous for!

263: 6/ 8/98 COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD

August 4, 1998
Les Chibana thought he might have had a Black Swift near his house on 7/14 and 7/15, but the bird never returned for confirmation. This looks like a miss this year :(.
Shorebird migration is in full swing, as can be noted from the fact that four of the five additions in this update are indeed shorebirds!
268: 7/18/98 INDIGO BUNTING

September 1, 1998
The peak of the Fall migration is upon us this month - we need 23 more species to reach the 300 mark this year. Some things to look for include Broad-winged Hawk, Sandhill Crane, American Golden-Plover, Wandering Tattler, Black Turnstone, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, jaegers, Dusky Flycatcher, eastern vireos and warblers, Clay-colored and Brewer's Sparrows, Vesper Sparrow, longspurs, and Bobolink. Looks like no easy ones left :(
273: 8/ 6/98 WHITE-FACED IBIS
274: 8/ 8/98 ELEGANT TERN
275: 8/16/98 STILT SANDPIPER
276: 8/18/98 SABINE'S GULL
277: 8/29/98 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH
October 5, 1998
A good month for eastern warblers and shorebirds has brought us to within 10 species of the 300 mark this year. Some things to look for include Broad-winged Hawk, Sandhill Crane, Wandering Tattler, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (not likely with the low number of Pectoral Sandpipers this year), Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Pomerine Jaeger, eastern vireos and warblers, Clay-colored Sparrow, longspurs, and Bobolink. Given the number of Black-throated Blue Warblers and Clay-colored Sparrows found in the general area this year there is probably at least one hiding somewhere in the county!
278: 9/11/98 BREWER'S SPARROW
279: 9/14/98 BLACKPOLL WARBLER
280: 9/15/98 VESPER SPARROW
281: 9/16/98 LARK BUNTING
282: 9/17/98 PARASITIC JAEGER
283: 9/17/98 SUMMER TANAGER
284: 9/19/98 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER
285: 9/26/98 RED-THROATED PIPIT
286: 9/27/98 CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER
287: 9/28/98 TENNESSEE WARBLER
288: 9/28/98 GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE
289: 10/ 2/98 BAR-TAILED GODWIT
290: 10/ 2/98 BLACK TURNSTONE
November 2, 1998
Well, things have slowed since the last update in the very beginning of October. Unless Nick gets his "montane invasion" we will be hard-pressed to reach 300 species this year. Some things to look for include Oldsquaw, Sandhill Crane, Heermann's Gull, Long-eared Owl, longspurs, Bobolink, Red Crossbill, and Evening Grosbeak.
291: 10/22/98 CLAY-COLORED SPARROW
292: 10/26/98 TROPICAL KINGBIRD
November 16, 1998
A few new species have brought us to within 4 of 300. Some things to look for include Oldsquaw, Sandhill Crane, and Red Crossbill. We'll probably need some good rarities from the upcoming Christmas counts too.
293: 10/11/98 LONG-EARED OWL
294: 10/31/98 EVENING GROSBEAK
295: 11/ 8/98 LAPLAND LONGSPUR
296: 11/14/98 NORTHERN SHRIKE
December 11, 1998
With three weeks until New Years Day we are sitting at 298 species for the year. Oldsquaw and Red Crossbill would do it...but perhaps the Xmas counts will turn up something much more surprising!

FINAL 1998 SANTA CLARA COUNTY YEAR LIST UPDATE
Well, Steve Rottenborn's Brant was #299 and 10 to 12 Sandhill Cranes
seen over Alviso on 13 Dec 1998 by Larry Spear (fide Steve Rottenborn)
supplied species #300. A good thing too, because the Christmas Counts
added nothing to the year list this year. (I bet those recently
discovered Magnolia and Black-throated Blue Warblers were somewhere in
the county on 31 Dec 1998 though!).
Of course, if Iceland Gull gets accepted by the CBRC a few totals will
jump by one.
I have received Santa Clara County year list totals from the following
five observers in addition to the three listed in the attached table.
Lots of people managed to break that 200 barrier this year!
Bob Reiling 232
Al Eisner 228
Tom Grey 216
Vivek Tiwari 209
Gloria Le Blanc 203
The summary table normally at the bottom of the list is repeated here
since this is the final circulation for 1998.

feel free to have at it (after 5 years, I'm burned out)!
Good birding in 1999!
